According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), March was the hottest in India’s 122-year history.
March’s maximum temperature broke every time-average maximum temperature record set in March 2010. The average monthly day temperature in India reached 33.09 degrees Celsius in March 2010.
Last month, however, the mercury soared, with an average monthly day temperature of 33.1 degrees, breaking all previous heat records for the month since 1901. The maximum temperature recorded at the Pitampura monitoring station in Delhi on March 20 was 39.9 degrees Celsius, making it the warmest day of the year.
Maximum temperatures in most portions of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan were 4.5 degrees above normal.
In no way is the high temperature in March unusual. The country’s March temperatures in 2020 and 2021 also set records.
According to IMD, March 2021 was the third warmest month in 121 years in terms of monthly average maximum temperature.
According to the IMD’s monthly review, the observed monthly average maximum, minimum, and mean temperatures for the country as a whole in March this year were 32.65 degrees Celsius, 19.95 degrees Celsius, and 26.30 degrees Celsius, respectively, compared to the normal 31.24 degrees Celsius, 18.87 degrees Celsius, and 25.06 degrees Celsius based on the climatology period 1981-2010.
In March, temperatures in several sections of the country reached 40 degrees Celsius.
The IMD pthe redicts above-normal maximum temperatures throughout northwest and central India, as well as areas of the northeast, in April. According to India Meteorological Department Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, normal to below-average maximum temperatures are predicted across the south peninsula, many neighboring eastern parts of the country, and the neighbouring territories of the northeast.
In April, India is anticipated to have typical long-period average (LPA) rainfall, according to the weather office. It predicted that rainfall in northwest and central India, as well as some regions of northeast India, will be below normal in April.
