Mumbai is getting a big change with the upcoming Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as the Sewri–Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link. It’s officially named the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link, in memory of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Let’s take a peek into what this new project is all about.
The Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) will open soon, connecting Central Mumbai with Navi Mumbai. It will cut short the 2 hours journey into just 20 minutes. This new 6th lane expressway will start at Sewri, cross the Thane Creek and end at Chirle near Nhava Sheva Port in Navi Mumbai. The purpose of this new sea bridge is designed to decongest Mumbai City and facilitate development in Navi Mumbai and Raigad district. This link will give a faster connectivity to the Mumbai Goa Highway, Alibaug Virar Multimodal corridor, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. It will also provide faster connectivity between two ports, Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.
Finishing touches are still going on the 22-kilometer stretch. Out of the 22 Km, 16.5 km over the sea and rest on land; you can easily drive at a speed of up to 100 kilometers per hour!. Isn’t exciting.
This new road is made with a special kind of steel bridge, thanks to technology from Japan. The pieces of the bridge are quite big, between 80 to 100 meters long and weighing a lot. It’s one of the coolest things happening in India’s building projects.
Besides helping people get around faster, it’s also thinking about nature. putting up things like noise barriers to protect birds and their homes near Thane Creek.
When it opens, a new way to pay tolls will be introduced. It’s like a fee you pay to use the road. Instead of stopping to pay, your car’s number will be linked to a system, and the money will be collected as you drive. It’s a bit like magic!
