Born into a modest family, Irfan was the eldest of four siblings. He led an ordinary life centered around school, family, and the simple joys of childhood. His father, Ramzan Sheikh, was a respected local figure with political connections, which unfortunately made their home a target in the region’s volatile security landscape.
Everything changed on the night of October 16-17, 2017. Three heavily armed militants forced their way into the house with the clear intention of assassinating his father. Gunfire erupted. His father fell fatally wounded. Terror gripped the entire family as the attackers advanced.
Most people, especially a child, would have frozen in fear. But Irfan did something unimaginable. Unarmed, untrained, and facing death, the 14-year-old teenager charged forward in a desperate struggle. He managed to wrest an AK-47 rifle from one of the militants. Then, with chilling composure, he turned the weapon on the attackers and fired, killing one terrorist on the spot.
The sudden, shocking sight of a young boy fighting back with lethal precision shattered the militants’ confidence. The remaining attackers fled into the night, leaving behind chaos, blood, and a miracle. Irfan had saved the lives of his younger siblings and other family members. Though he could not save his father, his split-second decision had turned certain tragedy into partial survival.
The nation soon learned of the incredible story. In 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind awarded Irfan the Shaurya Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry decoration, making him the youngest recipient in the award’s history.
Today, years later, Irfan stands as living proof that courage can rise from the smallest, most unexpected places. He carries the pain of losing his father, the weight of national recognition, and the quiet strength of someone who refused to be a victim.
