The Seasonal Shift

By Dr. Saru Sirohi, Delhi

As winter transitions into spring, significant lifestyle adjustments are required. Not only does the body need to adapt to rising temperatures and increased daylight hours, but there is also a rise in pollen levels. These changes bring along a myriad of problems. This “transition weather” doesn’t just require switching from heavy clothing to lighter layers, but also adjusting skincare routines, sleep cycles, hydration levels, and much more. This time of year can have subtle but significant effects on our bodies. Therefore, it is essential to adjust our routines accordingly.

Pay Attention to the Air Quality Index (AQI)
A common mistake we make during this transition period is ignoring air quality. Pollution is still a risk, especially in urban areas. Keep a close watch on AQI levels and wear a mask when going outdoors during peak pollution hours.

Watch Out for Pollen
Rising pollen levels can trigger allergies in sensitive individuals. One may experience symptoms such as a runny nose, watery and itchy eyes, a scratchy throat, and mild fever. Avoid going out during early morning and evening hours, and use antihistamines as prescribed by your physician.

Sleep Patterns
We need less sleep in summer than in winter, but it is extremely important to maintain a consistent routine. Start avoiding artificial lights and digital devices an hour before going to bed, as this might hamper the release of melatonin from the pineal gland, which is essential for maintaining a normal circadian rhythm.

Summer-Pattern Seasonal Affective Disorder
Even though Seasonal Affective Disorder is usually associated with winter, people with summer-pattern SAD may experience reduced melatonin levels, resulting in worsening sleep quality and depressive symptoms. Do not hesitate to seek help and contact your physician if you experience these symptoms.

Above all, make gradual changes. Use this moderate weather to increase outdoor activity, as it will help you acclimate. And don’t forget your sun protection and bottle of water!
