Krishnakumar S, once a reserved college student dismayed by vanishing greenery, has evolved into a resolute green warrior. Through Thuvakkam (Tamil for “the beginning”), he has planted over 65,000 native trees and created more than 40 dense mini-forests across these twin urban giants. His secret? The Miyawaki method, a Japanese technique pioneered by botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s, which turns barren land into thriving ecosystems in just three years.

The approach is simple yet revolutionary:

• Native species only: Teak, neem, jamun, pongamia, trees that belong.
• Dense planting: 3,5 saplings per square meter, mimicking natural forest layers.
• Soil enrichment: Biomass, mulch, and perforators for healthy, aerated earth.
• Zero chemicals: Just water, care, and time.

Results are stunning: trees grow 10 times faster, reach 10 meters in three years, and soon sustain themselves, pulling carbon, cooling streets, recharging aquifers, and calling birds home.

It began in college. Frustrated by Chennai’s shrinking canopy, Krishnakumar and friends started weekend clean-ups. Thuvakkam was born. What began as small acts of service grew into a movement, adopting Miyawaki to transform neglected plots into urban oases.

Trial by Cyclone: Resilience Forged in Mud

In 2016, Cyclone Vardah tore through Chennai. Winds uprooted ancient trees, floods drowned saplings, and months of labor vanished overnight. Thuvakkam’s young forests lay in ruins.

Most would have walked away. Krishnakumar did not.

“We cried,” he says. “Then we replanted. Every fallen tree was a lesson, not a defeat.”

At dawn, volunteers returned, mud-caked, determined. They rebuilt with deeper roots, stronger stakes. From wreckage rose forests more resilient than before.

Expanding North: Hyderabad’s Green Awakening

Strengthened by survival, Thuvakkam turned to Hyderabad, a city suffocating from lake encroachments and heat islands. Mini-forests now rise near Hussain Sagar and Ameenpur Lake, delivering real change:

• Cleaner air: Measurable drops in PM2.5.
• Water revival: Up to 30% higher groundwater percolation.
• Cooler streets: 3,5°C lower under the canopy.

His dream: 100 forests by 2030. Not mere green patches, but oxygen factories, flood shields, and mental health havens in a country losing 2.33 million hectares of forest yearly.
