BEST OF THE BEST CRICKET UMPIRE: DICKIE BIRD

An umpire is the only single person who, alone, can make or ruin a game of cricket. If he makes it, your average cricketer takes the fact for granted. If he ruins it, your cricketer grumbles, forgetting that, for far too long, cricketers have paid too little attention to the umpiring of their matches. Players have only half knowledge about DRS, but they make big cries all the time.

Dickie Harold Bird, the umpire’s encyclopedia, survived during the pre-DRS period and did not have the feel of DRS then. But he made his name by true and fair umpiring, as the title of his book suggests. Not Out revealed his guts and determination in doing a decent job.

As a bachelor, he lived for the game he loved so much, as a batsman playing for Yorkshire alongside Geoff Boycott. While cricket legends Geoffrey Boycott and Dickie Bird did not share a significant batting partnership for Yorkshire at the professional level, they were lifelong friends and teammates who played together for Barnsley Cricket Club as young men.

Dickie Bird was a legendary English cricket umpire known for his distinctive style and passion for the game. With a career spanning over five decades, he officiated in numerous high-profile matches, including Test matches and One-Day Internationals.

“Dickie Bird – an Encyclopedia of Cricket” isn’t a formal title of a published book, but rather a descriptive phrase that accurately captures the legendary status of Harold “Dickie” Bird, a beloved former England umpire and personality known for his eccentricities and deep understanding and contribution to cricket.

While he did write a million-selling autobiography, the phrase “encyclopedia” refers to his widespread recognition for his fairness, humor, and expertise, which extended beyond just the technical aspects of umpiring into the very fabric of the game. After retiring from umpiring, Dickie Bird worked as a cricket commentator and pundit, sharing his expertise and insights with fans.

As his book’s name Not Out suggests, he remained connected with the game he enjoyed the most — until his passing in September 2025.
