When 20-year-old Taniparthi Chikitha took her position at the shooting line in Winnipeg, Canada, the odds were stacked against her. Just hours earlier, she and her teammates had finally reached the venue after being stranded at an airport for three long days due to an airline strike. Exhaustion, anxiety, and uncertainty weighed heavy, but Chikitha drew her bowstring with clarity of purpose. A few minutes later, she etched her name in history as the first Indian woman to win gold in the Under-21 compound bow category at the World Archery Championships.
Hailing from Sultanpur village in Peddapalli district, Telangana, Chikitha has long been regarded as a promising archer. Yet her journey to the world stage has been anything but easy. Battling harsh winds in the finals and the fatigue of disrupted travel, she defeated Korea’s Park Yerin 142-136, showcasing both technical brilliance and unwavering mental strength.
For Chikitha, the medal was more than just a personal milestone. “It was a completely different challenge, but I held on to my focus,” she said, speaking from Canada. Inspired by India’s compound archery stalwarts Abhishek Verma and V. Jyothi Surekha, she has spent the last few years honing her craft with relentless discipline. Verma, who has mentored her since 2020, and Jyothi have been constant sources of guidance. “We discuss strategies, share experiences, and I learn something new from them every time,” she noted with gratitude.
The victory also shines a light on the network of support behind her success. Daughter of farmer Srinivas Rao, Chikitha credits her parents for their sacrifices and recalls how successive district collectors extended help during her formative years. Her father sums up the family’s dream simply: “We want to see her win a medal at the 2028 Olympics.”
Chikitha herself is already looking ahead. A former National Games gold medallist, she now sets her sights on the upcoming Asian Championship, the Asian Games, and ultimately the Los Angeles Olympics, where compound archery will make its debut.
Her journey marked by grit, humility, and resilience offers a reminder that sporting glory is often born out of the ability to withstand turbulence, both literal and metaphorical.
