Palam Kalyanasundaram, born into modest beginnings, embarked on a journey that transcended personal challenges, leaving an enduring legacy of compassion. This narrative unfolds the remarkable life of a man, aptly dubbed “The Man of the Millennium.”
Kalyanasundaram’s early life was marked by adversity. Losing his father in childhood, he was raised by his resilient mother, Thaayammal. It was her unwavering spirit that planted the seeds of compassion within him, igniting a passion to help others. His academic prowess led him to become a gold medalist in library science, holding advanced degrees in literature and history.
For 35 years, Kalyanasundaram served as a librarian at Kumarkurupara Arts College at Srivaikuntam. However, his devotion to humanity exceeded the confines of his workplace. Month after month, he donated his salary towards charitable causes. Even after retirement, he took on odd jobs, working as a waiter, and continued his contributions to orphanages and children’s educational funds.
At the tender age of 23, Kalyanasundaram responded to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s call for support during the war with China. He donated 8.5 gold sovereigns to the National Security Fund, showcasing a sense of duty ingrained in his character.
Kalyanasundaram’s selfless endeavors did not go unnoticed. He received numerous awards, including the BAPASI award for best librarian in 2012, a Lifetime Service Award from Rotary International in 2011, and the prestigious Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2023. His impact reached global proportions, with accolades from the United Nations, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and an American association conferring upon him the title “Man of the Millennium.”
The turning point in Kalyanasundaram’s life occurred during a visit to a slum in Triplicane, Chennai. Witnessing the dire conditions of the children, he established the Triplicane Slum Children Welfare Organization. This initiative later evolved into the Indian Children’s Welfare Organization, eventually becoming the World Children’s Welfare Organization. Through education, cleanliness, and hygiene programs, he aimed to provide a brighter future for underprivileged children.
Kalyanasundaram faced personal hardships during the 1970s, resorting to living as a platform beggar and later as a hotel server. However, his determination to serve the children of the world remained unshaken. He actively worked for the upliftment of disadvantaged communities, particularly the Arundhathiars and Scheduled Caste people in Padmanabamangalam.
Noteworthy personalities like former President APJ Abdul Kalam, former US President Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru acknowledged Kalyanasundaram’s exceptional contributions. His efforts were not just confined to India; he established a global footprint, earning him admiration and praise from leaders across continents.
A Man of No Possessions, Yet Abundant Richness:
What sets Kalyanasundaram apart is his profound commitment to charity. Over the past 36 years, he gave away all his earnings, award money, and pension, totaling an astounding ₹30 crores. He selflessly distributed his share of the family property to the needy. Unmarried by choice, Kalyanasundaram prioritized using his income to uplift the less fortunate over building a family.
