Gujarat Congress leader and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police over a tweet. He was arrested by the police from Palanpur Circuit House at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
The news of Jignesh Mevani’s arrest was confirmed by his supporters. They claimed that the police did not have an FIR copy with them while arresting the Congress leader.
The Assam Police registered a case against Jignesh Mevani under non-bailable sections like conspiracy to create enmity between two communities, insulting the community, disturbing the atmosphere of peace based on a tweet shared a few days ago.
JIgnesh Mevani has been taken to Ahmedabad and from there the Assam Police will take him to Guwahati on a train.
The Congress leaders’ supporters will protest against his arrest at the national capital today, April 21, with slogans of ‘save the constitution, save the country’.
Jignesh Mevani’s arrest comes ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections scheduled to be held by the end of the year.
