THE UNBREAKABLE BOND OF EMOTIONS: SUDHA OM DHINGRA
CALLING INDIA
A Literary Luminary Promoting Hindi in the U.S.

“A life dedicated to literature, empowerment, and the service of Hindi.”
Many Indians have made significant contributions abroad, bringing pride to India through their achievements. In this edition of Calling India, we introduce you to Sudha Om Dhingra, a renowned writer, artist, journalist, and editor residing in the United States. Her life has been devoted to the service of the Hindi language, shaping her identity as a prominent literary figure.
Early Life and Family Influence
I was raised in a nurturing and forward-thinking family. A polio survivor, I faced physical difficulties, which left one of my legs weakened. However, my family ensured that I never felt less than others because of my condition. Regular physical activity helped me maintain steady movements.
I never saw myself as someone who needed compassion or pity. Instead, I strengthened my self-confidence and determination. My parents were deeply engaged in India’s fight for independence and were also social reformers who strongly believed in humanitarian service. Their values had a profound influence on my perspective on life.
Growing up in a home filled with books, I developed a deep passion for literature. My father wrote poetry in Punjabi, while my brother composed verses in Urdu. Surrounded by literary inspiration, I took up pen and paper early in life, setting the foundation for my remarkable writing journey. Writing is not just a hobby for me—it is a deep-seated passion. My works reflect my connection to nature, the harmonious singing of birds, and a keen awareness of the struggles of the underprivileged.
Literary Beginnings and Journalism
My journey into the literary world began in childhood. My aunt’s captivating storytelling style left a lasting impression on me, shaping my ability to narrate with depth and emotion. Despite my uncle’s opposition to my literary pursuits, destiny had other plans. My writing talent flourished early on, and by the age of five, I had already become a child artist on All India Radio.
I entered journalism with contributions to Punjab Kesari, where I conducted numerous interviews. Encouraged by my family, I ventured into radio, theatre, and later, television. Marriage in 1982 brought significant changes, leading me to settle in the United States. Despite initial challenges, I continued my literary pursuits with renewed passion.
Empowering Women and Advocating for Social Change
Though living in the U.S., I have maintained a strong connection with India and its people. I deeply empathize with women who have been marginalized by society and often express their struggles through my work. I stand in solidarity with women who have faced oppression, and this compassion fuels my writing efforts.
A profoundly spiritual individual, I lead a simple life and have made substantial contributions to feminist literature. My literary brilliance has been recognized through various Ph.D. and M.Phil. research studies centered on my work. My initiatives for women’s empowerment go beyond literature—I have worked tirelessly to restore the self-esteem of abused women, helping them reclaim their identities.

Scholarly and Cultural Contributions
I have played a pivotal role in promoting Hindi and Punjabi on a global scale. I have taught Hindi at Washington University in St. Louis, advocating for a simple and engaging approach to learning languages. I firmly believe that Hindi can be learned more efficiently through Bollywood songs and film dialogues, making it more accessible to a larger audience.
My life and values were profoundly shaped by my parents, Inderjit Sharma and Shashi Wala Sharma. In 1985, I established the India Art Group to support theatre and cultural performances. Additionally, I founded Vibhuti Sanstha to aid distressed women, serving as its creator and protector.
Notable Works and Achievements
My literary portfolio is extensive, featuring several acclaimed works:
- Novels & Short Story Collections: Talaash Pehchaan Ki, Vasooli, and Ganga Bahti Rahe
- Poetry Collections: Sarkati Parchhaiyan and Dhoop Se Roothi Chandni
- Short Story Compilations: Chalo Phir Se Shuru Karein, Khidkiyon Se Jaagti Aankhein, and Sach Kuch Aur Tha
In 1996, I received an award in the U.S. for my efforts in promoting Hindi. In 2005, I was honored by the Heritage Society for my contributions to literature and social work.
A Legacy of Literature and Service
I stand as a towering figure in diaspora literature. My works not only showcase my literary brilliance but also highlight my unwavering commitment to social reform, particularly in advocating for women’s rights. Living in the U.S., I have tirelessly worked to promote Hindi, making me an invaluable asset to Indian culture. My contributions continue to be a source of pride for India and the global Hindi-speaking community.
