In Ukraine, An American Journalist Was Dead, While Another Was Injured.
According to medics and witnesses, a US journalist was killed and another was wounded in Irpin, a frontline northwest suburb of Kyiv, on Sunday.One of the Americans died instantaneously, according to defense Shapovalov, a volunteer surgeon for the Ukrainian territorial defence, while he treated the other.The body of the victim was seen by AFP reporters in Irpin. A third person was injured, a Ukrainian who was in the same automobile as the Americans.The shooting was quickly blamed on Russian soldiers by Ukrainian officials, but the circumstances were unclear. Small weapons and artillery fire were heard in the area, according to AFP reporters.The vehicle was hit by a bullet. Two journalists were present, as well as one of our own (a Ukrainian),” Shapovalov told AFP.”Our guy and the journalist were both injured; I gave them first aid; the other sustained a neck wound and died immediately.”According to papers discovered on the American reporter’s body, he was Brent Renaud, a 50-year-old video documentary shooter from New York.The discovery of a New York Times identity card led to speculation that he worked for the publication, but the New York Times confirmed that he was not employed by the publication at the time of his death.”Brent was a gifted photographer and filmmaker who had contributed to The New York Times throughout the years,” deputy managing editor Cliff Levy said in a statement.”Though he had previously contributed to The Times (most recently in 2015), he was not assigned to any Times desk in Ukraine.”
