Lighting the Path to a Brighter Future: “Utkarsh’s Inspiring Story”

In the heart of Patna, a young change maker named Utkarsh Raj is rewriting the story of hope and education for underprivileged children. As the founder of HHFC Trust, an organization dedicated to providing free education to slum dwelling children, Utkarsh’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and social commitment. In a conversation with Cafe Social, Utkarsh opens up about his journey, the mission of HHFC Trust, and his vision for a brighter tomorrow.

A Personal Journey

Growing up, Utkarsh faced significant challenges in accessing quality education. These early experiences shaped his passion for ensuring that education is accessible to everyone. “When I came to Patna for my education, I noticed many children living in poverty—selling balloons or doing odd jobs, slum dwellers, rag pickers. It was heart breaking”, he recalls. This realization led him to take action. What started as a small initiative to provide education to a handful of slum children soon grew into a larger movement, reaching over 300 children and counting.

Utkarsh’s journey wasn’t influenced by a single person or event. Instead, it was driven by a deeper understanding of the transformative power of education. ”Giving money or material help isn’t enough. Education, however, has a transformative power. By educating children, we’re not only changing their lives but also impacting future generations and their families. This realization has kept me going.” he explains. This belief has been his guiding force behind his work.

Starting HHFC Trust was not without its challenges. The biggest hurdle was gaining the trust and support of the parents who lived in slums. In the poor slum bases households where Utkarsh works, education often takes a backseat to survival. “Convincing parents to let their children study instead of work was difficult,” he shares. By organizing events and showcasing the long-term benefits of education, the team gradually won over parents. Today, many actively encourage their children to pursue education and even support the Trust’s effort.

When asked about the vision of HHFC trust, “The mission of HHFC Trust is to ensure that every child, even in the remotest villages, has access to quality education. We aim to establish centres in underserved areas, collaborate with NGOs, and even set up libraries in tribal regions. The idea came from seeing the gaps in education access and wanting to bridge them”. Which this explains their deep passion for social change.

Building a reliable team has been crucial for the success of HHFC Trust. Utkarsh collaborates with colleges, offering internships and volunteering opportunities to students. “Many people want to contribute to society but don’t know how. These internships not only bring fresh ideas but also train students to work on the ground,” he says. Several of these interns have gone on to become committed members of the team.

Transforming Lives

One of the most rewarding aspects of Utkarsh’s work is witnessing the transformation in the children he helps. He recalls a moment from the early days of the Trust: “When we asked the children what they wanted to be when they grew up, their answers were vague and unambitious. After two years, one child said, ‘I want to be like you, helping people and making a difference’. Moments like these reaffirm the importance of their work. The programs offered by HHFC Trust go beyond academics. “We focus on holistic development,” Utkarsh explains. This includes practical learning, arts and crafts, moral ethics, and even self-defense. By nurturing both educational and life skills, the Trust aims to create responsible and confident members of society.

A vision for future

Funding and resources are critical for the sustainability of HHFC Trust. The organization relies on crowdfunding, individual donations, and support from entities like the Central Education Ministry. These resources enable them to expand their programs and reach more children in need. Utkarsh’s vision for HHFC Trust is expansive. He aims to establish more educational centers in rural areas, to improve the quality of education. The organization also plans to address broader issues like electronic waste management and community-based environmental programs. “We want to ensure education reaches every child in need and create a ripple effect of positive change,” he emphasizes.

When asked what advice he would give to young people, Utkarsh shares a valuable lesson from his mentor: “Before becoming a doctor or an engineer, first become a good human being.” He encourages young individuals to start small but stay consistent. “Every effort counts, and together, we can create a better society,” he says.

Utkarsh’s work with HHFC Trust stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. By providing underprivileged children with the tools to dream and achieve, he is not only transforming lives but also paving the way for a brighter future. As HHFC Trust continues to grow, it serves as a reminder of what one individual’s dedication can achieve—a better tomorrow for all.
