Rohini Khadse Khewalkar’s life is a testament to the power of perseverance, visionary leadership, and unflinching commitment to public service. A lady of numerous abilities, Rohini Tai, as she is affectionately known, has consistently broken barriers and left an indelible mark on different segments, ranging from politics to finance and social reform. The daughter of Eknath Khadse, an eminent politician and veteran pioneer in Maharashtra, Rohini inherited a strong political legacy but carved her own unique path, becoming a formidable leader in her own right.

Early Life and Passion for Public Service

Rohini’s roots lie within the small town of Jalgaon, where her upbringing, influenced by her father Eknath Khadse’s political journey, ingraining in her the values of hard work, astuteness, and kindness. Eknath Khadse’s illustrious career in legislative issues formed her understanding of administration and public service from an early age, rousing her commitment to social causes. Rohini illustrated an unshakable commitment to her community and to advocating for women’s rights and empowerment. Her solid connection to the grassroots and her understanding of the battles of conventional individuals, particularly women, set the foundation for her future endeavors.

Her political career took flight when she aligned with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), founded by Sharad Pawar, one of India’s most regarded political leaders. As the head of the women’s cell of the NCP (Sharad Pawar group), she has been instrumental in pushing forward the agenda of gender uniformity and social equity. Rohini has worked persistently to empower women politically, helping them pick up representation at different levels of administration. In her political journey, she has moreover stood for inclusive policies that elevate marginalized communities, promote social harmony, and focus on advancement for all. Rohini Tai’s political philosophy is profoundly rooted within the conviction that true progress is only achievable when everyone, especially the underprivileged, is given equal opportunities.

Beyond politics, Rohini’s advocacy has consistently focused on issues affecting marginalized communities, especially in rural areas. Most recently, Rohini rose to prominence in Bodwad taluka, demanding immediate compensation for farmers who suffered severe crop damage due to heavy rains. She inspected the damaged fields in Manur and surrounding areas, meeting with farmers to understand their losses and advocate for financial support. She called for the government to declare a wet drought and provide compensation to the affected farmers, ensuring their livelihood wasn’t destroyed by these extreme weather conditions.

Leadership During Crises

Her exceptional crisis management skills came to the fore during the COVID-19 pandemic, she stepped in decisively, opening nearly two lakh accounts for students under Maharashtra’s Mid-Day Meal Scheme within 30 days. Her leadership ensured that children from marginalized backgrounds were not excluded from essential government welfare programs.

Her leadership during this crisis exemplifies her dedication to uplifting rural communities. Rohini has also been a vocal advocate for reforms that bridge gender gaps in political representation, believing that true progress is only possible when everyone, especially women and marginalized communities, are given equal opportunities.

Q1: What drives your passion for leadership in politics?

Response: My passion stems from a desire to uplift people, especially women and rural communities. In politics, I have found platforms where I can make real, impactful change. Leadership is about creating opportunities and finding solutions, which is what I strive for every day.

Q2: What has been the most impactful change you’ve brought about in your leadership journey?

Response: Advocating for women’s rights and creating platforms for their empowerment has been one of the most impactful changes. Whether it’s pushing for gender representation in politics or ensuring financial security for rural women, seeing the results of these efforts makes me incredibly proud. Recently, working with farmers to secure compensation for their losses has also been significant because it directly impacted their livelihoods.

Q3: What challenges have you faced as a woman leader in male-dominated fields?

Response: There have been challenges, of course, but I’ve always believed in my capabilities. Women leaders bring unique perspectives, and once people see the results of your work, they respect you for your contributions, regardless of gender.

Q4: What is your vision for the future?

Response: I envision a society where women have equal representation and opportunities in leadership. I also want to continue working on financial inclusion, especially for the rural poor, and focus on sustainable growth for future generations.
